Thailand has just passed new gambling laws that mark a significant shift in the country's approach to gaming. For the first time, both Thai citizens and international tourists will be legally allowed to play poker within the country.

The new law, which was printed in the Royal Gazette on 11th October, 2024, states twenty-three types of gambling and traditional games have been legalized. These include dice gamaes, bingo, boxing, backgammon, and card games. It states that card games, including poker and rummy, are legalized if played from noon to midnight.

The new law aligns with the government's push to attract more tourists and boost economic growth through the establishment of integrated entertainment complexes, which may include casinos. This development could transform Thailand into a major gaming hub in the region, competing with neighboring countries like Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, Singapore and Cambodia, which already have established poker games and tournaments.

This legal shift is expected to significantly boost Thailand's tourism and hospitality sectors by providing new entertainment options for visitors, all while creating thousands of new jobs in the Kindgom.
